After my little rant on how much I think the BlackBerry Browsers sucks, especially when compared to WebKit based browsers like Apple’s Safari , how timely is it that TD Newcrest analyst, Chris Umiastowski, released a video, Evaluation of BlackBerry and iPhone, where he quotes RIM stating that they expect the BlackBerry Browser to be on par with Apple’s browser by next summer?
The video is about seventeen minutes long but I found it pretty interesting. The big take aways for me were that the iPhone is pretty much trouncing the BlackBerry in every area expect text entry and email when it comes to consumers, but, that RIM can catch up by next year if they get a move on in enhancing the UI.
It will be interesting to see if RIM is up to the challenge…
“he quotes RIM stating that they expect the BlackBerry Browser to be on par with Apple’s browser by next summer?” By next summer? A whole year away? RIM must be joking. A year is a LONG time when it comes to the smartphone industry. Also Apple is not standing still, since January 9, 2007 Apple has been leading and innovating the entire smartphone industry.
PS “text entry and email” on the iPhone is also on par if not “pretty much trouncing the BlackBerry ” too.
I agree with you up to your last sentence. Text entry and email on the the iPhone being on par with the BlackBerry may be your opinion, but, it is definitely not the consensus opinion.
Some people said the same about RIM’s SureType Technology. Like everything else, once one learn the method it can be just as, if not more intuitive, reliable, and fast. Just because something is different that what we are used to from RIM’s BB doesn’t mean it too isn’t “pretty much trouncing the BlackBerry ” as well. Coming from years of BB use (both full qwerty and SureType) your right it’s my opinion “that the iPhone is pretty much trouncing the BlackBerry in every area” including “text entry and email.”
you are not serious right? typing on the iphone is slower and much more error-prone than on a bb. plus you can’t type without looking down at your fingers the whole time. the tactile feedback can’t be replicated that easily.
agree BB browser sux, why can’t they embrace an open engine like webkit or gecko?
they would have a great and very compatible browser in no time
by next year haha! (if it happens at all… most websites don’t support the bb engine)
