For those who didn’t know already, the BlackBerry was the number one selling smartphone in the world last year. Of the 1 billion total mobile phones sold, 1.4%, or about 14 million BlackBerrys allowed Research in Motion to claim the top spot for smartphone manufacturers.
1.4% of the market compared to overall top dog Nokia, who sold about 40% of all mobile phones last year, is pretty miniscule in the grand scheme of things. Good news for RIM, however, is that the smartphone market grew by over 50% from the previous year compared to just 11% for cell phones overall and is the fastest growing segment with in the industry.

Robb, this has nothing to do with this post…but please for the love of everything sacred, please change the images of 87xx and 71xx models at the top of this blog. Since those devices we have had the 81xx, 88xx, 83xx and now all the 9xxx stuff. Sorry for the digression (is that even a real word?).
I second AF’s position!!
The absolute number of 1.4% means little, the growth means a lot though. Also, it’s dumb to compare to Nokia as they sell a TON of entry level cheapo phones in emerging markets with tiny margins. This is not RIM’s game.
I already knew BLACKBERRY was number one!!! these band wagons (ha ha ha ha including me) just didnt know it until later…ALTHOUGH i hate my 7100i i am switching to sprint for the curve, but im pissed i want the bold now!
I work with Vringo and wanted to let people know about what the company has created.
The Facebook application version lets you see your friends pictures as caller ID. The Facebook version works for Blackberry phones who are BlackBerry fans. Free to use and easy to set up, Vringo lets you quickly send your friends Facebook pix to your cell phone.
After installing the facebook app, just go to: http://get.vringo.com on your phones browser.
iPhone #1
I may be wrong but 5 different websites I viewed 3 months ago had the smartphone order like this: #1 Symbian #2 Blackberry #3 Iphone #4 Palm #5 Windows Mobie and #6 Android. Also I’m using a tmobile g1 (android) to post this and I know android is at least #5 now. Also
Symbian had about 50 to 60 percent of the market depending on the site compared to 20 for bberry and 16 iphone.
