You’ve got to give it to BlackBerry Cool… When they leaked rumors that AT&T was going to lock down GPS in the BlackBerry 8820 internet collectively got ticked off and it would appear that AT&T has changed their tune.
Right now RIM and AT&T are in the process of renegotiating the GPS status of the BlackBerry 8820. We’re not sure if the deal has been finalized yet, but if the AT&T documents are correct, it seems at least all but a done deal.
I am glad that AT&T decided to renegotiate based on user feed sentiment. One Verizon is more than enough.
Or Blackberrycool reported on a rumor which turned out to burn them? BUT! Bravo to Blackberrycool and At&t if this is true…
“One Verizon is more than enough.” Amen to that! There is only so much crippling, lies and FUD that the industry can take, consumers are getting too smart for the service providers lack of respect and honesty.
Ha ha…that line about Verizon is great 🙂
I still think this was all a rumor, the 8820’s released in the UK had full GPS functionality, so why would this all of a sudden pop up as RIM and AT&T here in the states were going to disable it or lock it down so to speak.?
My belief its all rumor
Does anyone remember when the 8800 first came out with AT&T? You couldn’t install BlackBerry Maps and only Telenav would work with the GPS. This is nothing new.
As expected its nothing but FUD… Most likely planted by verizon to try and shift blame away from them crippling and removing functions.
“This is not a hardware/firmware-based limitation, as is the case with Verizon’s actual neutering of GPS functions on their devices (all of which have the GPS chipset on-board, mind you).”
The non-issue that has become a whirlwind of misinformation and misunderstanding surrounding the release of the BlackBerry 8820 and it’s GPS capabilities.

I don’t know where everyone is getting their info, but I just called RIM and AT&T. RIm had no comment and AT&T stated that you MUST use their GPS service. I wish it was not so. Maybe a change is in the works.
If anyone has ACTUAL hands on knowledge, I would love to hear from them.
I *bought* the 8820. You *have* to pay the monthly service fee for TeleNav if you want to use the GPS… But once you do, Google Maps works fine.
BGR has acknowledged the GPS is limited, but they’ve not printed an apology or retraction for calling BBCool un-nice things…
So, I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust BGR so much anymore.
As Karlos states, you MUST PAY to use the GPS on the 8820.
ATT SUCKS. I spent over 1 hour with ATT support before the people at RIM told me that i need to pay for TeleNav.
Don’t buy the 8820 with the GPS locked.
