I just read a press release from web analytics company, StatCounter, and, believe it or not, the BlackBerry has overtaken the iPhone in mobile internet usage for the first time.
BlackBerry OS overtook Apple’s iOS for the first time in the US in November in terms of mobile internet usage according to web analytics company, StatCounter. The company’s research arm, StatCounter Global Stats finds that for the first time in the US BlackBerry OS at 34.3% overtook Apple’s iOS which recorded 33% in November.
I have to admit that this news was completely unexpected, especially now that the iPhone has overtaken the BlackBerry in U.S. smartphone market share. I would have to imagine that the WebKit BlackBerry browser in BlackBerry 6 has a lot to do with this trend. I wonder what the numbers will be like once a critical mass of BlackBerry users move over to BlackBerry 6? The Webkit BlackBerry Browser is currently only available to BlackBerry Torch 9800, BlackBerry Bold 9780, and BlackBerry Style 9670 users which are all fairly new to the market.

Are you kidding me? The webkit browser is very unusable and pretty terrible. It doesnt do any better of a job than the previous browsers. For the short time I used OS6 on a Bold, i didn’t see any benefits over Opera. It doesn’t even hold a candle to Opera.
I am on the record for stating that the WebKit BlackBerry Browser isn’t on par with what you get on the iPhone and Android, but, to say that it isn’t any better than the old BlackBerry Browser simply isn’t true. It’s good enough that most BlackBerry users won’t cringe from using it, and, actually will think is pretty good if they are comparing to older BlackBerry devices.
As for the tired pricing, that may be a reason for iPhone internet usage trending down. I, however, am stating that the BlackBerry’s uptick is related to the new WebKit BlackBerry browser.
Robb, Seriously? come on man.
The reason for fall is due to the tiered pricing by At&t. That was the whole point for doing that. It Worked and Verizon just gave a press conference stating their tiered pricing will begin this December for LTE devices.
T-mobile got rid of free tethering while rolling out their ‘4G’ network also. All These companies are #$@%ing jerks. They are charging more for data and also preventing the consumers from using the new and fast devices on their fast networks.
I dont stream music from my phone through bluetooth in my car anymore because of this crap.
also when people are using opera on a blackberry phone. does it show that as the case in these statistics? I’m not sure about you guys but once this contains flash I’d be quite happy withe blackberry browser… moving in and out is still not that great but things seem to render quite nicely.
