Contrary to the what the hype machine that we call Apple might have you believe, the BlackBerry Curve, not the iPhone, was the number one selling smartphone in Q2 2009.
According to an IDC report, not only did RIM capture the top spot with the BlackBerry Curve, it holds the number 3, 5, and 6 spots as well. 4 Devices out of the top six is impressive no matter how you look at it.
The top ten devices according to the IDC report were as follows:
1. BlackBerry Curve
2. iPhone 3G S
3. BlackBerry Pearl
4. iPhone 3G
5. BlackBerry Bold
6. BlackBerry Storm
7. HTC T-Mobile G1
8. Palm Pre
9. HTC Touch Pro
10. HTC Touch Diamond

Make that #1, 3 5 and 6 not 3456
WOW in Q2 2009 the BB Curve, a cheap smartphone with a great rep, sold on just about all service providers, was in the market long before the iPhone, sells more than the iPhone 3GS which is available on just one US service provider at 3 times the price of the Curve? WOW
I’m sure RIM would be happier if the newer, flagship, Storm and/or Bold would be the BB’s selling as well (or better than the iPhone 3GS) in Q2 2009.
WOW, but not really news to call out the cheerleaders with pom-poms for.
Wow… That sure sounds like a “the Mac is better than the PC even though far fewer of them are sold than the PC”, arugment if I’ve ever heard one. It may actually be true, but, what difference does it make.
I think the point here is that way more BlackBerry devices were sold than were iPhones. I wonder, should RIM be more concerned about Apple and their second place iPhone, or, should Apple be more concerned about RIM and their 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th place BlackBerries along with any new devices they come out with this year that pop up on that list?
What wasn’t posted yet in the source article:
“If you’re not convinced, you can always criticize IDC’s methodology. Because neither phone makers nor wireless carriers divulge their sales numbers for individual models, IDC interviews sources in the industry, including parts manufacturers, and scours all other available data. The company’s analysts then attempt to reverse-engineer, say, how many Curves were sold by BlackBerry to wireless carriers and other sales channels. But IDC doesn’t attempt to guess how many of those phones end up in consumers’ hot little hands. So this is list is a best guess, rather than a carefully measured ranking.”
Also missing was the info that both the Palm Pre and the iPhone 3G S arrived towards the end of the quarter.
The IDC report is flawed at best, so put that in your “Contrary to the what the hype machine that we call Apple” pipe and smoke it.
Excuses don’t explain, explanations don’t excuse.
If you use your logic, one could make the point that the only reason the iPhone 3Gs will be number one in Q3 (i believe it will be) is because it was already out and that the Tour and Curve 8520 needed time to get going.
Until Apple offers more form factors on more carriers the iPhone will never surpass the BlackBerry on a yearly devices sold basis in the U.S. I am not saying that it would if these things happened, but, there is no question that it cannot be number one with no keyboard and no, verizon, sprint, and t-mobile.
Ah but all the facts matter, besides the iPhone is already “number one” without a keyboard and no, verizon, sprint, and t-mobile as the iPhone took the lead of the entire industry even before it was released and none of the other manufactures have come even close.
“number one”, “hype machines”, the flawed IDC report, and this whole thread is nothing but fanboy fodder. The IDC list while a good guess really doesn’t matter when it come to the big picture, nor does really matter if RIM is ahead of Apple or Apple is ahead of RIM. What the list does show is which 2 platforms consumers want.
