According to a solid BGR contact, BlackBerry OS 6.0 is in the works. Additionally, BlackBerry OS 5.2 is going to be released this year.
We’ve got so many questions… The biggest being will OS 6.0 be out this year as well and is 5.2 just a bridge to allow users to upgrade to 6.0?
We know that a WebKit BlackBerry Browser is coming. New CDMA BlackBerry devices already support 3D graphics. Will OS 5.2 address memory allocation? Will RIM make it easier on developers by releasing development tools on par with those available for WebOS, Android, and the iPhone. Will 5.2 be the last platform for older devices? Will 6.0 only work on new devices?
The list of questions is almost endless…
I’ll be honest, application support is going to be a big problem for RIM if they don’t make it easier on developers. A lot of it has to do with the application memory issue, but, the biggest issue is that it is so much easier to create apps for the other smartphones out there that developers aren’t willing to spend the time on BlackBerry.
My next device will probably be whatever Google releases on Verizon around the time that my contract expires (October) unless RIM addresses app support in 5.2 or 6 or whatever is out at that time…
I make yours, my words…
When Is BlackBerry going to come out with OS 5? I know that a lot of devices have it but my Curve is less than a year old.
I have a first gen Storm. When my time for upgrade comes, I plan to switch to the Pre Plus. I have had enough of the slow browser and leaking memory.
I’m a webOS lover, but if you’re a mid-to-heavy user of your device, be prepared to walk around with a spare battery. OS is also somewhat sluggish for those who like to fly as well. Being a heavy user myself, I’m waiting on the Nexus One for VZW. Already tested an N1 on TMO and loved it (although the 3G issues were a problem).
The N1 update that is being released this week will also have multitouch. Sweet…
Try opera mini 5. It’s fast and not as memory hungry as the bb browser. http://m.opera.com
Im using Opera Mini 5. Better then the native browser.
I love some of my Blackberry features, but it is getting a bit dated. Blackberry has the best push email, the keyboard, and BB Messenger. Most other functions are done better by others. At some point some company is going to get close enough to RIM to make it worth my while to switch (though I will never switch to a device on AT&T’s network).
I switched from Htc, got a good pakage on a little curve which I love. went to listent to iplay and couldnt because the sodding thing does not support flash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
had I known I would have gon down another telecomunication path
