Specs look pretty good…it will be interesting to see if the OS media features can turn around their fortunes.
Everyone knew about this being released when RIM announced the date for the “event.” Not sure why folks would be pissed because AT&T released the identity on the site prior to the event taking place.
I think about it like the Apple Press events. Apple holds all the information until after the live event. Call it part hype, part marketing. The thing is we all know what will be announced and many of the details but we still want the official information. If Apple released everything 15 min before the press event it would not help the live bloggers much. There was only a couple groundbreaking bits of information like the Ads, WiFi Sync, and universal search that made you say OH WOW.
Don’t get me wrong this was an amazing announcement but like you said we knew much before. I just believe AT&T should have held the announcement until after the press event. Like they do with Apple.
In all seriousness…this device didn’t even warrant an “event.” Apple only has one product in the “phone arena,” with adjustments to that line once a year. That would warrant an “event.” But to release your 10+ models, variations, etc. per year, make it hard to fathom a “wow” factor. This, in RIM’s eyes, is an event because they “finally” came out with a device that is a bit different, but in reality not far off from what they already have out there. The big deal here is the OS, but we’ve already seen the release from RIM regarding that advancement months ago.
I’ll tell you what really would be worthy of an event…the announcement of the Pearl 9100 on AT&T or TMO . I still wonder why the rest of the world is rocking that device but here in the US it remains MIA. The only explanation I can gather is that they would like to release it with OS6 and give some cushion between the 9800 and the 9100 for sales.
