Hot off the press! There’s an update for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 for T-Moblile. No changelog as of yet but will keep you updated.
This update will now bring the OS to 5.0.0.713
I’m currently updating the OS via the OTA update feature. To access this, go to Options, Advanced options, Wireless Updates. It may take a couple of tries to get it to show, but trust me… it’s live!
Go out and get it! Comment on anything you guys/gals notice 🙂
Did the patch help TMO’s coverage map? Damn I wanted to like that phone on that service. No matter how many patches they send out, it won’t fix the overall service and reception. After the countless times I ran down the issues with them, plus receiving a free HD2 from them, there was no way anyone can rely on their service and feel comfortable.
I’m pretty confident that this update had nothing to do with T-Mobile’s coverage. That’s dependent upon their network infrastructure and cellular towers. These updates are geared more towards tweaking and optimizing the phone’s software, i.e. memory leaks, known glitches, etc.
The most important thing when deciding on a phone is to make sure that the carrier’s coverage is sufficient in your area. If you have a lackluster mobile coverage you can pretty much label your Blackberry as an expensive paper weight. If you really love this hardware, consider looking at AT&T. They have the same exact phone and their coverage might be a little more complete in your location.
I was actually being sarcastic with regard to the patch helping TMO’s coverage (but their coverage is bad). I’m actually in the business and test many of these devices, providing error logs to RIM for newly released products. I had a laundry list for the TMO 9700 when it came to errors. I run 6 devices across the big 4 carriers, testing coverage, devices, etc. Personally, I loved the build, feel, battery, etc. of the 9700, but TMO just failed on coverage and the device had multiple SW build issues. Couldn’t use it as a primary which I was hoping for. AT&T is not much better when it comes to reliability and dropped calls…and I reside where their former headquarters was just 2 years ago. Go figure.
great find! thank you!
FYI, for those who updated..
So far the changes are as follows:
– People are noticing the browser speed has marginally improved.
– Blackberry Messenger is now part of the ‘Core’ apps and cannot be deleted natively
– Some people are noticing a slight increase in available free memory (average is about 2-4 mb) and responsiveness of the phone.
– 3G to WiFi change-over is quicker
