We thought for a little while this morning that the BlackBerry Tablet which has been rumored for months wouldn’t actually get officially announced today during the BlackBerry DEVCON 2010 keynote. Well, so much for that…
Mike Lazaridis’ portion of the keynote pretty much centered around the BlackBerry PlayBook, an ultra thin (9.7mm), 1GHz Dual core processor tablet with 1Gb of RAM, standard HDMI output, both front and back facing hi-def video cameras, with HTML 5, Flash 10.1, and Adobe Air support. Oh, and, did we mention that the PlayBook is enterprise ready?
Needless to say we will have much more to talk about once we can get our hands on a full spec sheet…
Looks like this OS need to be rolled into their mobile devices ASAP.
And if they wait too long, like M$ did with WM7, they are toast.
A few things left out that I’m curious about…
1. Battery life.
2. Storage capacity. Internal size and SD slot availability.
3. Plastic?
4. Pricing. This could be a huge determining factor.
I’m also curious as to why the bezel is so large and the screen so small…looks like they had some room to play with. I understand the camera in the front, but let’s maximize design. If they want to capture Apple’s share in this sector, they really need to hit the design aspect on all cylinders.
Personally, I’m waiting on HP’s effort with webOS. Printing capability, a more robust OS than Apple and RIM, etc. Next year is certainly building up to be the year of the tablet.
Why 7 inches? Does Apple has some sort of lock on 10 inch touchscreens? It seems like everyone else is doing 7.
A tablet screen should at least be as big as a standard sheet of paper, IMO.
Q2 2011? Why does RIM wait so long to get their products into production? Can you imagine what Apple or Android will have by then? When Apple shows off their stuff usually its next week or next month, and the Samsung Galaxy tab looks to be coming out relatively soon too. The OS looks cool, but I think its too little too late.
Why this will fail with consumers.
No cell modem, for now.
Sure you can tether it with your BB, but carriers wack you the Enterprise plan if you do which ends up being more expensive then ATT’s $25 pay as you go, iPad plan.
