According to note from analysis firm Jefferies & Co., the BlackBerry Storm3, not the BlackBerry Storm2 9570 refresh that was cancelled, but the real Blackberry Storm3, should hit a wireless carrier near you by the end of Novemeber. The note states that the BlackBerry Storm3 will run BlackBerry 6 and will not have the “clickity click” haptic touch screen. (It will be like the screen on the iPhone and the BlackBerry Torch)
[Via eWeek]
This will be my next BlackBerry. The big question… Will you be able to run QNX on it when it comes out next year?
Doubt it. I doubt any BB device today will be powerful enough to run QNX.
Sure hope this is true. I’m pretty fed up with my 9530, and prowling ebay even USED 9550’s are going for $200+. Can’t see dropping that kind of money on a phone that will never run BlackBerry 6.
Read the article Janek. They claim the Storm 3 will come out in November and run BlackBerry 6, while a more “iPhone like” model will be coming “first half of 2011” and will run the QNX PlayBook OS. Ah…choices.
My suspicion is no BlackBerry smartphone we know of now will run QNX. But that’s clearly the future of the BlackBerry OS. Hopefully the java based days of legacy BlackBerry OS are numbered.
Means nothing to me if it is still a Vz exclusive. THey need to get out from under that… seriously. It is of no benefit to RIM. The exception is if the Torch becomes like the Curve 2 (everywhere).
They need to end the Storm line. It’s been cursed from the very beginning.
imo, the best part of the Storm is the clicky screen. If the Storm is without that then there are better options on the market.
Think you are in the minority. It was a failed gimmick from day one.
I work on moving platforms and the SurePress reduces the errors close to zero. Whilst my those I work with with other devices curse the amount of errors forced on them by the gimmicky touch screens.
For game playing office workers iphone and Android may be suitable. Those in the field prefer the SurePress.
It’s so popular that RIM is killing it. Like I said, a gimmick.
Anything you buy has a gimmick to appeal to a set audience. A good gimmick makes you buy it a bad gimmick doesn’t.
God help us if we all are only allowed to buy what one person decides is ‘popular’.
The haptic touch screen was indeed the best part about the phone. On the Storm2 it was not a failed attempt- It was a homerun. As Paul stated, if there is no haptic touchscreen, then yes, there are better options out there.
DavidB and every one here I will again remind everyone. The BlackBerry OS is not a Java OS. Please stop this it hurts my eyes to read. Most of RIM’s internal apps are written in C++. In the old days you could even write native BlackBerry apps. They took it away for security, or so they said. If you don’t believe be how do you think the WebKit browser was ported so fast? I promise you it was not ported to Java.
The problem with BlackBerry OS is it’s old, yes. The problems are many, yes. Mostly because RIM was out there before alot of manufactures. It’s hard to build the future in.
But again Java has nothing to do with it. BTW: Android uses Java for most Apps.
Now I have previously said I would go Droid X. I am still planning on it, unless I know for sure that a BlackBerry Storm 3 is coming by November! So RIM it’s in your court. Announce the phone, so we know it’s coming. I can wait a month… (my annual upgrade date is Oct 28th)
I said:
“Hopefully the java based days of legacy BlackBerry OS are numbered.”
Now, you can go off claiming that “BlackBerry OS is not a Java OS”, but I think the evidence defies your statement. Install a BlackBerry OS distribution to your PC. Browse to: “C:Program FilesCommon FilesResearch In MotionSharedLoader Files\Java”. In there you find all of the applications and such that make up the OS and are push to your phone by javaloader during a OS install. Tell me with a straight face all these .cod files aren’t java.
On your device, go to Options…About. Click past the first page of info. Does not the next page that comes up have a nice pretty “Java Powered” logo, and the first line of text states: “This device is Java Powered, containing tested and compatible Jave virtual machine software from Sun Microsystems Inc.”
Now, after you’ve completed these two tasks, come back and explain to us all how that doesn’t mean the legacy BlackBerry OS is java based as I stated.
*Chuckle chuckle….*
I love the Sure Press of the storm’s. I’ve been looking at replacing my storm1, and I can’t stand that the touch screen phone’s don’t work like sure press.
I’d bet money that if Apple came out with Sure Press it would be heralded as one of the greatest innovations in touch screen phone tech ever.
You’re kidding me.
Sure Press is a stupid, failed Gimmick. Only the retards at RIM would think to make such a FAIL of feature.
Shawn, I agree with you, though we may be outnumbered by the iphone gang. lol
Completely agree with you Shawn. It would be deemed “magical” if it had come Apple, and sites like Boy Genius Report and Engadget et al would be sounding the drumbeats to indicate the death knell of plain old capacitive touch screens.
My personal observations are that EVERYONE I know that has a Storm2 (a bunch of folks) likes the screen. Those who play around with it in a Verizon store and don’t immediately get it are quick to criticize, but those who buy and USE a Storm2 daily and accustom themselves to the capabilites SurePress provides are going to be very unhappy if RIM dumps it from the Storm3. It’s just another touch screen phone then, just as crappy to try to type on as any Android or iPhone or whatever.
Couldn’t have been stated any better DavidB. Thank you for talking logic to these folks.
I love sure press on the Storm 2… But if RIM is killing it that alone would not make me move to another platform… I am ok with a regular touch screen too. It’s just that the surepress screen is waaaayyy better.
But like I said before timing on me staying BB is everything… Crackberry and BoyGeniusReport have not picked up this story. I have a feeling they were unable to confirm that the source has insider info… I could be wrong on that… But I think it’s odd.
In the begining, I wasnt a huge fan of the Blackberry but knew at the time it was the best phone for emails & web. I discovered that it wasnt the phone but it was me because the Blackberry was just so diffrent from evey other phone. IPhone and HTC has cool and exciting features on their phone line but now I just cant see my self making the switch. Nevertheless, I hoped that the IPhone went to Verizon and so desperately wanted to jump on the Iphone band wagon. Now that this may become a reality, I’m stll not convinced. I have the Storm 9530 and yes it has its bugs but I fell that its one of the best out there. I know that the people at RIM have huge plans for us. Just hang on folks, it will happen. I for one, plan on waiting for that IPhone killer. Its closer than you think. Storm 3, sign me up!!!
Could not wait any longer for the Storm 3 went with the Droid X last friday, I also liked the Sure Press feature. Wish RIM would have been forthcoming on the release date!!!
I agree with you paul. The Surepress screen was what got me to buy the first storm. When the Storm2 improved on it significantly, that made it even more appealing to me. All the talk was that they had perfected the Surepress tech in the 9570, and i couldn’t wait to get a hold of it. The cancelation of that model is a huge mistake in my opinion. That is what kept me with Blackberry and away from the iPhone/Droid models. Why is it so difficult to just build an on/off option into the os for the phone?
