As many of you who listen to the SMRpodcast already know, I broke down and bought a BlackBerry Torch this passed weekend. I hate to reiterate the sentiment of most every other objective BlackBerry Torch review out there that you will find, but, at the end of the day, the device is what it is…
The BlackBerry Torch seems like a proof of concept of BlackBerry 6 running on 2-year old hardware…
I actually really like BlackBerry 6, Research in Motions long over due major overhaul significantly enhanced update to the BlackBerry operating system. (A detailed review of BlackBerry 6 is coming) The hardware on which RIM decided to debut it on, however, is kind of baffling.
My take on on the BlackBerry Torch 9800 from a hardware standpoint ranges from “underwhelming” to “its alright i guess”. It is as though RIM took spare parts from the BlackBerry Storm and the BlackBerry Bold 9800, slapped them together, and put a really decent OS on it. Don’t get me wrong, if you are on AT&T and looking to upgrade, or, get your first BlackBerry, the BlackBerry Torch is the device to get. I just don’t see, however, how this device will attract consumers that don’t already want a BlackBerry when compared to Android and the iPhone.
RIM is going have to seriously up their game when it comes to hardware or they will continue to get their lunch handed to them by the likes of HTC, Motorola, Samsung, and pretty much anyone else building Android devices.
Agreed!
I agree with you. The only thing I would say is this is something fixable. They don’t make the chips and screens in their devices. They use 3rd parties, whereas they do write their own OS. The OS is close… The hardware just neeeds a bump.
Higher res screen and faster processor would fix most of the issues. Also there is NO excuse to leave out OpenGL.
Now they just need to fix the memory problem (install apps on the memory card) and forcing the OS to restart when adding and removing apps.
I expect the Storm3 (not the Storm2 refresh) to fix all the hardware problems…. I know they probably need to write some pixel doubling logic into their OS before a resolution bump…
But here is the good news to Berry users. The Browser is decent!!!! This was the number one problem that they fixed… Why they did not hit this out of the park with a hardware bump is beyond me.
agreed too
