Remember back in November when Verizon announced that it would open up their network to outside mobiles handsets, devices, and applications? Well, according to a press release put out by Verizon a couple of days ago, the nation’s second largest wireless carrier will release Verizon 1.0 of the technical specs for devices that will work on their “Any Device, Any App” network-only service option.
Verizon will release Version 1.0 of the Any Device, Any App specifications at the upcoming Open Development Device Conference scheduled for March 19th in NYC.
The conference will focus on how traditional device and consumer electronics companies and entrepreneurs new to the wireless ecosystem can bring new wireless devices to the marketplace under Verizon Wireless’ Open Development initiative.
Verizon’s Open development initiative expects to offer the network-only service option later this year, however, if you want to get details sooner, you can either attend the Open Development Device Conference in March, or, listen to the webcast that you can find details for at www.verizonwireless.com/opendevelopment.

A step in the right direction.
Can’t wait to see a post from you know who…
Will this let us use the GPS Feature on our devices without being forced to use VZNavigator?
@CCoates68
I think it all depends. Will RIM create a non-Verizon branded BlackBerry sold independently of Verizon as well as a Verizon branded version? The Verizon branded model would probably be just as locked down as ever, however, the cost of the device would be subsidized by Verizon.
A non branded Version would probably not be locked down, however, would RIM even create it? They wouldn’t have the distribution or carrier advertising, plus the fact that Verizon may request RIM not to even create a non-branded version.
Robb,
Think the bottom link is mixed up:
http://aboutus.vzw.com/opendevelopment/OpenDevelopment.html
Interested to see how this lip service from verizon becomes or doesn’t become reality. (It wouldn’t be the first time verizon feeds FUD to the press) Whats interesting is why the need for all the pomp and circumstance of a 5+ month roll out? If verizon are truly “Any Device, Any App” why is there a release for technical spec’s? Seems like that in itself removes “Any” and makes it “Some Device, Some App” no? Even taking into consideration the reality of different networks and devices being built for specific networks (cdma/GSM) this seems alittle off. Also lets put it into perspective GSM providers always allowed customers “Any Device, Any App”.
I give verizon credit for this new “open” initiative. However one can not be faulted at being sceptical when a company like verizon with it’s long history of banding, crippling feature and function removal, and refusal to activate anything other than verizon branded phones on their network wakes up one day being pro-consumer for the first time in it’s existence. Something is pushing verizon to do this, whats also interesting is how all things come back to “The iPhone has spurred this on. noted ABI Research analyst Phil Solis.”
Perhaps Om has it right:
http://gigaom.com/2007/06/12/5-ways-iphone-will-change-the-wireless-biz/
Sounds like Galen Gruman is dead on right:
http://www.dailywireless.com/features/verizon-wireless-open-access-112707/
Although Galen wrote the article before verizon announced with Voda that they are upgrading their networks to GSM/LTE and dropping cdma. With cmda gone verizon also loses the proprietary cdma crutch and can truely be “Any Device, Any App”. IF they chose to do the right thing.
Verizon like any other wireless service provider should make their money providing wireless service, not by finding more and more ways to control customers devices letting them charge additional fee’s for what should be DEVICE autonomous features and functions.
Nice to see that RIMarkables resident troll (post number one in this thread) still worries more about what other people are going to post instead of the information given in the thread itself. LAME.
So you are basically saying the RIM is Verizon’s biotch when it comes to BlackBerrys.
see, I can post links in my comments too! 😛

Robb,
Thanks for bursting the open bubble….
“The Verizon branded model would probably be just as locked down as ever,”
For consumer sake, for RIM sake, and even for verizon’s sake I hope your incorrect (just this once) 🙂 I can’t see how the words “Any Device, Any App” and “Open” can be used with any genuinity by verizon when they are still locking down devices. Let the ETF be if the customer bolts with a subsidized device. IMO “subsidized” should also become a thing of the past.

ahhhh…
That brings back memories of Jr. High…
Robb,
How come when verizon is the topic, or anything remotely having to do with verizon does it seem the children come out who can’t handle adult discussion and are hell bent on using RIMarkable as their toilet for crap posting and wasting your bandwidth?
Robb,
I am assuming that you are talking about the Rick Astley video. I had such a crush on him when that song came out.
The way that the conversation changed from Verizon opening up their network to 80s pop stars in only 11 comments is truly amazing.

THAT IS SOOOO DAMN FUNNY! Oblivious…
Rick Astley! Classic. Bet you can’t beat this 80’s classic!
Robb,
Think someone needs their weekly reminder (yet again) Funny when someone like that has nothing to say (what a surprise to the rest of us here at RIMarkable) a personal post is made trying to yet again distort the FACTS and the TRUTH. It’s amazing that ignorance and a lack of attention make the sad few here use RIMarkable as their toilet for crap posting and wasting your bandwidth. I guess it’s expected from someone who posts weekly LAME apologise’s and lies for constant poor behavior and lack of respect for others. Whats even more LAME is the ignorance which thinks his crap posts are adding to RIMarkable “Traffic and clicks equal bling bling”
“I just ask that they respect my wishes about not personally attacking each other and completely high jacking the comments section here on RIMarkable.”
I almost hope the Open Development initiative is lousy as I would hate to see the effect it has on our friend Hellno.
Robb,
Interesting the small group children all show they are more worried about what others post than the topic at hand. It must really be tough having verizon and ignoring all of verizon’s anti-consumer games as those in the know post the TRUTH and FACTS. This small group of children are so desperate for attention they think thread crapping and personal posts USING RIMarkable as their own personal toilet will get them what they are so desperate for. EIther way this small group shows their true ignorant selves as with each post they take away from and add nothing to RIMarkable. Thankfully the rest of us respect RIMarkable enough to keep discussions ON topic and OFF personal posts.
For those who can’t handle adult discussion there is always http://www.powderpuffmarkable.com
Hellno, thy name is irony.
That said, Robb has pointed out that we all make decisions on a wireless carrier based on our individual criterion. I have mine and based upon that criterion, I choose VZW as I weigh things differently than you do. Does not make my decision or process any less valid than yours.
Oh jhp2,
There are no excuses for your thread crapping. This has nothing to do with opinions or your “decision or process”

IS a thread crap adding NOTHING to the discussion Robb started with this thread. Perhaps you think personal posts are cute like the other sad few here. Face it you thread crapped and are getting called out for it. No excuse will make your error acceptable.
I’d think everyone would like to hope verizon is being sincere with it’s “open developement” / “Any Device, Any App” but this whole 6 month roll out of freedom ala verizon’s “Version 1.0 of the Any Device, Any App specification” and past deed make this initiative smell rather sour already. Since when does a company need to roll out it’s spec’s for consumer freedom? Thats a tough question for those in the know using standard, open, global GSM.
For those who can’t handle adult discussion there is always http://www.powderpuffmarkable.com
Seriously hellno,
You say the same stuff in every post that has anything to do with Verizon. There is no question in any regular RIMarkable readers mind that you detest Verizon and feel that anyone who would even contemplate using this is a few cards of of a full deck.
You can’t get too upset if Verizon, at least on the surface, does something the contradicts points you’ve made over and over and over again and someone gets a light hearted jab in, now can you?
I can think of a comment or 142 where you’ve left a little stink that had nothing to do with the thread.
My comment policy, or lack there of, applies or doesn’t apply. as the case may be, equally to everyone.
Robb,
Not getting “upset” about the topic of the thread, far from it in FACT. IMO verizon’s new initiative and path forward is a very good thing IF it’s sincere, honest, transparent and pro-consumer like it should be. (It’s no secret verizon has gotten caught multiple times in the past for “initiative” which have been not on the up and up and found to be untrue) verizon’s move to GSM/LTE (pushed by Voda) and this new open initiative could be a welcome and long over due step forward for verizon. The market is certainly making the service providers move in this direction some have been resisting it more than others. There is alot of money to be made for providing wireless service based on standard, open, global technology, there is no reason for non-standard, closed, proprietary technology when it comes to consumer communication. verizon might just learn providing the wireless service is alot more lucrative then spending $$$ to sell 3rd party proprietary, and cripple consumer devices.
Now as for the other BS the vealots have brought up….
However what is funny is the sad few verizon fanboys who in every thread that verizon is a topic or even could be a topic they thread crap and worry about what or if others are going to post. The verizon fanboy’s have made the example in this thread (as well as others) so clear. No intelligent thought is posted which add’s to RIMarkable on topic thread discussion, but plenty of ignorant thread crap’s by those desperate for attention more worried about if/what others are going to post. This poor behavior shows RIMarkable no respect, they USE RIMarkable and then crap all over it. The common thread with these sad few fanboy’s is verizon.
Was browsing the net looking for words to explain the sad few verizon fanboy’s here actions it’s funny but it seems they have a combination of “Stockholm Syndrome” and “cognitive dissonance” learning the TRUTH and FACTS about a service providing company they blindly trust.
Stockholm Syndrome has certain symptoms or behaviors according to Joseph M. Carver, PhD for Mental-Health-Matters.com.
These include:
A. Positive feelings by the victim toward the abuser/controller
B. Negative feelings by the victim toward family, friends, or authorities trying to rescue/support them or win their release
C. Support of the abuser’s reasons and behaviors
D. Positive feelings by the abuser toward the victim
E. Supportive behaviors by the victim, at times helping the abuser
F. Inability to engage in behaviors that may assist in their release or detachment
According to Dr. Carver, four situations or conditions must be present that serve as a foundation for the development of Stockholm Syndrome:
A. The presence of a perceived threat to one’s physical or psychological survival and the belief that the abuser would carry out the threat
B. The presence of a perceived small kindness from the abuser to the victim
C. Isolation from perspectives other than those of the abuser
D. The perceived inability to escape the situation
“‘Cognitive Dissonance’ explains how and why people change their ideas and opinions to support situations that do not appear to be healthy, positive, or normal. In the theory, an individual seeks to reduce information or opinions that make him or her uncomfortable. Even though we might find ourselves in a foolish or difficult situation, few want to admit that fact – the more you invest (income, job, home, time, effort, etc.) the stronger your need to justify your position.”
Defending verizon a sign of mental illness? Survey says YES! especially when the TRUTH and FACTS are pointed out by those in the know.
Defending Windows over Mac a sign of mental illness
http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/490/opinion/
Remove “Windows over Mac” and insert “verizon” and this theory fit’s our verizon fanboy’s here.
Perseverating over something could also be a sign of mental illness. If you do not like VZW, don’t use them. But no need to insult those of us who do.
And all this because I expressed concern over your mental health. I was looking out for you. Where is the luv?
TTFN.
jhp2,
You still are adding nothing, playing games and thread crapping. Since when is posting the TRUTH and FACTS about verizon an “insult” to anyone?
Since when is it not acceptable to discuss verizon without a sad few fanboys getting their panties in a wad?
Sorry girls but yet again the threads are not about you and sure are not about me. Don’t spend any effort worrying what others will or won’t post. Don’t post your hopes and dreams about others, here at RIMarkable it’s not about personal crap.
For those who can’t handle adult discussion http://www.powderpuffmarkable.com The rest who can handle FACTS and TRUTHS will be here at RIMarkable posting on topic and with respect for Robb and RIMarkable.
Per Robb,
“I can think of a comment or 142 where you’ve left a little stink that had nothing to do with the thread.”
Have a nice day 🙂
Robb,
It’s not like reality didn’t show it for a while now but WOW there are a sad few here which have some real issues. Perhaps in addition to RIMarkable and iPhoneMarkable, you can open MentalMarkable too.
Delusional
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delusion
“A delusion is commonly defined as a fixed false belief and is used in everyday language to describe a belief that is either false, fanciful or derived from deception. In psychiatry, the definition is necessarily more precise and implies that the belief is pathological (the result of an illness or illness process). As a pathology it is distinct from a belief based on false or incomplete information or certain effects of perception which would more properly be termed an apperception or illusion.”

“If you do not like VZW, don’t use them. But no need to insult those of us who do.”
Thru your posts jhp2 you keep verifying YOUR problems…
Point out where anyone here at RIMarkable posts something about verizon where it pertains directly to jhp2. Since when do the FACTS and the TRUTH about a corporation “insult” anyone personally? Maybe you think it would help the sad few for everyone to distort the FACTS and TRUTH about verizon? If the FACTS and TRUTH are so painful and are a “insult” to some, it’s those themselves who are making it so. verizon wouldn’t be opening anything if people didn’t discuss reality.
An opinion: I find these message boards can be very informative. There are those that troll these boards looking to argue with anyone that has an opinion, showing up on every Verizon tread, posting the same remarks, over and over again. I have stopped folowing some threads because I am tired of all the back and forth. So a call to arms: if you see this type of post, don’t respond. Just keep it positive and on topic. I believe it is the only way to stop this useless banter. Just an opinion.
I like Verizon for the coverage. I have considered other carriers, but until 3g is widely deployed by them, Verizon is the only logical choice. The was an article on Engadget last week that GSM can be easily hacked with equipment costing less than $1000. So what is better, a crippled CDMA device on Verizon, or a GSM with slower data that is easily hackable?
fud,
Not that your post has anything to do with the thread topic BUT your FUD is being debunked. Interesting that your call to arms is purely lip service, as your choice to thread crap and hit the Send comment proves.
1 – Did you know 2G technology is plenty of speed for how the Blackberry was designed?
Is GSM secure?
From the outset, GSM has been a system designed with stringent levels of inbuilt security. With constantly enhanced transmission protocols and algorithms added to the flexible and future proof platform, GSM remains the most secure public wireless standard in the world.
http://www.gsmworld.com/technology/faq.shtml
GSM Security and Encryption
by David Margrave, George Mason University
http://www.hackcanada.com/blackcrawl/cell/gsm/gsm-secur/gsm-secur.html
The security and authentication mechanisms incorporated in GSM make it the most secure mobile communication standard currently available, particularly in comparison to the analog systems described above. Part of the enhanced security of GSM is due to the fact that it is a digital system utilizing a speech coding algorithm, Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) digital modulation, slow frequency hopping, and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) time slot architecture.
Way back in ’02 the NSA (National Security Agency) went GSM. Why? (2002 figures) “GSM is the fastest growing wireless telecommunications technology around the world, with over 646 million users spanning 168 countries, and more than 400 GSM network operators worldwide. “GSM is clearly the best wireless service for carriers and consumers alike,” said Tim Wong, executive vice president and chief technology officer of VoiceStream, a leading wireless service provider of GSM. “It is the most successful digital standard, bringing the benefits of global roaming to consumers and economies of scale to operators. The combination of GSM, Type 1 security and VoiceStream’s offering of Wireless Priority Service provides the U.S. government with unprecedented capability for assured and protected communications for routine as well as national security and emergency preparedness missions.”
Verizon is upgrading it’s network to GSM/LTE. Making a argument based on FUD is “useless banter”.
The choice of service providing is exactly that choice, but the answer is clear for most. A standard, open, global GSM device IS a more desired choice than “a crippled cdma device on verizon”.
1)verizon with their “Open Development initiative”, and their network upgrade to GSM/LTE easily proves the answer to that question
2)Over 2.8 BILLION customers World Wide (Q1 2007) also easily proves the answer to that question.
fud debunked
